Wisdom from the Holy Fathers

Doing Good to All

“You see that a tree gives its fruit both to its master who prunes it, and to strangers; or that a spring gives drink both to those who clean it, and to those who fill it with dirt and spit in it; or that the suns shines both on those who marvel at it, and on those who curse it. True Christians are like this who bring forth good fruit (Matt. 7:17) as a good tree, or shine as lights on the world, (Phil. 2:15). They do good to all, to the good and the evil, to their friends and their enemies, imitating their heavenly Father, Who maketh His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and the unjust, (Matt. 5:45). This teaches you, O Christian, to be conformed to the true Christians and with them to the heavenly Father, not to the sons of this age, who love no one except themselves and for the sake of themselves.”  ~ St. Tikhon of Zadonsk, On True Christianity, Vol. 1
